Port Zante is where cruise ship passengers arrive in Basseterre to be greeted by streets full of colourful modern shops selling souvenirs and duty-free goods. Port Zante is located in Basseterre, which is the capital of St. Kitts, and it is especially significant to our main industry which is Tourism.
Start your island visit with a stroll around St Kitt’s relaxed island capital of Basseterre. From Port Zante pass through the archway of the Old Treasury to the Circus roundabout (St Kitts has no traffic lights!) and spot the green Berkeley Memorial clock, a well-known St Kitts landmark. On Fort Street and Bank Street, you’ll pass market stalls and food vendors selling anything from fruit smoothies, to local lunchtime dishes. The main square – once the site of a slave market – was formerly known as Pall Mall and the area around the adjacent green clock tower and water fountain is known as Piccadilly Circus, or The Circus.
This “Gibraltar of the West Indies” should be included on one day’s itinerary for its photo ops. If you climb to its top slopes on a clear day, you can see up to six other islands in the distance.
Built between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugar cane, the St Kitts Scenic Railway now takes tourists on a sightseeing trip around the island. The 3-hour, 30-mile journey offers some of the most spectacular views of the coastline.
