Cienfuegos, capital of Cienfuegos Province is a city on Bahía de Cienfuegos, a bay on Cuba’s south coast. It’s known for its colonial-era buildings. Cienfuegos is located about 250 km (160 mi) from Havana and literally translates to “one hundred fires”—cien meaning “one hundred”, fuegos meaning “fires”. On the central square, called Parque José Martí, Tomás Terry Theater has gold-leaf mosaics and ceiling frescoes. The Provincial Museum explores the city’s colonial history. In 2005, UNESCO inscribed the Urban Historic Centre of Cienfuegos on the World Heritage List, citing Cienfuegos as the best extant example of early 19th century Spanish Enlightenment implementation in urban planning.
